In 1972 the Senegalese millionaire Diouga Kebe wanted to create a Super Band in Dakar to compete with groups from other African countries. He gave the order to Bass Coumbala to complete his idea. Therefore he selected the best musicians from different groups in Dakar and he opened a night club called SAHEL for them to play. As it was usual at that time, the group took the name of the club. The 13 musicians created a unique sound and were the first group which gave its identity to the Senegalese Music. It was the first group who started mixing cuban music, which was dominating the country for more than a decade, with traditional music, creating as a result the first songs of Mbalax. Chef d' Orchestre was CHEIKH TIDIANE TALL, playing organ and guitar. Lead singer was IDRISSA DIOP and on saxophone THIERNO KOITE. These three members were the core members of the group.
The SAHEL released only one album in 1975. The album BAMBA included 6 tracks and the song “Bamba” is the first Mbalax song ever recorded. The night club of SAHEL became a school for all the musicians in Dakar, every night they were going to watch live the innovations in the compositions of this group. The group stayed together only 3 years and all the musicians continued careers with other groups. IDRISSA DIOP left for France were he had a solo career for 30 years and a few years with Carlos Santana. CHEIKH TIDIANE TALL continued in Senegal composing and arranging the music for many groups. THIERNO KOITE was a member of Super Etoile de Dakar of Youssou N'Dour and until now he plays alto saxophone for Orchestra BAOBAB.
TERANGA BEAT label wanted to bring back to life this super band. First of all released an album "IDRISSA DIOP & CHEIKH TIDIANE TALL - DIAMONOYE TIOPITE" including 12 tracks of old recordings many of them unreleased. As far as the musicians were still active created the band again with the same spirit.
